Can tattoos be completely removed?
This is a tricky question.
Our answer is, for the most part, yes.
Laser tattoo removal is highly effective in removing tattoos, especially when using q-switched lasers.
Don’t trust us. Trust science.
Scientific evidence concurs with our statement that laser tattoo removal works.
But even though we know that laser tattoo removal using a q-switched laser is effective, how does it actually work?
How does tattoo removal work exactly?
Let’s start with the ink:
The tattoo ink sits in your skin (but it’s a little more complicated than that).
Different colors of ink sit in different layers of your skin – some sit in the dermis while some sit in the epidermis.
We won’t get into the details on which colors sit in each layer.
The ink is in a semi-solid form in your skin.
The laser penetrates deep into your skin, and depending on the color of the ink will use different wavelengths to target those colors.
When the laser makes contact with the ink, it proceeds to break up the ink particles into smaller, solid forms.
Think of the tattoo ink as a large boulder.
Over the course of your treatments, the laser breaks up that large boulder into smaller and smaller pieces, until eventually the ink is broken up into tiny pebbles.
Once the ink is broken up into small enough pieces, then your body’s immune system can flush them out.
The Laser Tattoo Removal Fading Process
Most people ask us, “how many treatments will it take to FULLY remove my tattoo?” or “what does the fading process look like?”
It depends. If your tattoo takes 7 treatments to remove, then the ink will progressively fade during those 7 treatments.
There’s not a universal calendar that we use that we can show you EXACTLY what your tattoo will look like after 2 treatments, 3 treatments, or 5 treatments.
Just know that your tattoo will progressively get more faded over time.
What To Expect After Laser Tattoo Removal?
After Each Treatment
Expect to have some swelling, redness, and soreness directly after each treatment.
These temporary side effects (and others) are uncomfortable but know that they go away.
To minimize the pain and discomfort, you can use cooling packs to provide some relief.
You should also avoid direct sunlight for long periods of time.
After Your Last Treatment
At this point, your tattoo is removed!
Expect to enjoy life without your unwanted tattoo!
